it was amazing When the very first poem causes you to sit back in your seat and admire the sky through the window, smiling because you have been blissfully reminded how much raw beauty and strength rests in the voices of others, you know you re about to read one hell of a book The beginning of Blossom and Bone is exactly as it should be Lyons voice unafraid and honest is introduced perfectly and then she unfolds.Lyons unfolds like wings from a chrysalis, like freshly washed bed sheets, like dirty, crump When the very first poem causes you to sit back in your seat and admire the sky through the window, smiling because you have been blissfully reminded how much raw beauty and strength rests in the voices of others, you know you re about to read one hell of a book The beginning of Blossom and Bone is exactly as it should be Lyons voice unafraid and honest is introduced perfectly and then she unfolds.Lyons unfolds like wings from a chrysalis, like freshly washed bed sheets, like dirty, crumpled bed sheets, like dog eared pages, like kept loved letters, like a tongue in a lover s mouth, like your wildest dreams No stone is left unturned as Lyons poetry delves deeper into the poet and the reader I found myself reminiscing throughout the entire book reminiscing about heartbreak, heartache, love, friendship, freedom, loss, sanity, insanity, the nights I ve spent alone, or spent with someone I no longer loved, or spent with someone I hope I never have to let go of Blossom and Bone finds and identifies the parts of a person we long to bury and holds them up to the light The final poem It s Only Poetry summarises this best It is only through poetry and pain that we can romanticise about perfection, purity and a pale white light we mistake for everything good I finished Blossom and Bone finding pleasure in pain and still breathing despite it to keep your mindand body as whole as splintered can be A Hard Thing, Nicole LyonsWhen Georgia Park reviewed Lyons , I Am a World of Uncertainties Disguised as a Girl, she likened Lyons prowess to that of Rupi Kaur whose books Milk and Honey and The Sun and Her Flowers have dominated the 21st century poetry scene Park urged us to forget those and pick up I Am a World, and I am going to do exactly the same with this third book Blossom and Bone treats us to many short, touching and punchy pieces I know you thinkyou want a kiss, but my tongueis a serpent, and my mouthis a poorly wired cage From Eve s Lips, Nicole LyonsBut, it also stuns with longer pieces which weave together images of blood, fire, dawn, midnight, goodbyes and lost love The Keeper of Time, Under the Syca, Sunflowers, It Never Heard That, and I Won t Always Be Me, to name just a few.Blossom and Bone proves Nicole Lyons is a poetry powerhouse and the sooner the whole world recognises this, the better This is the book of poetry you should have on your shelf, beside your bed, on your coffee table, in your backpack, in your memory box and in your kitchen for those times you slide down cupboard doors in utter despair It is Nicole Lyons who is paving the way for all of us So, enjoy flag 5 likesLike see review Sep 06, 2018 Nicholas Gagnier rated darkness Lyons full on embraces hers in every barb and line break.Reviewing her previous book, I Am a World of Uncertainties Disguised as a Girl, I felt a bit out of place It had all the idiosyncrasies and charm I ve come to expect of her work, but the overarching theme made me feel like I was watching a music festival for free outside the gates and then expecting to have a credible opinion on it This is not the case with Blossom and Bone As someone who has flirted with my own mortality the last couple years, Lyons is connecting on a primal level here, all the while brilliantly splitting herself along dual lines She draws an effortless parallel between desire to live and acceptance she cannot beat death Love and hate, rumination and regret are all on display here Like most of her work, the majority is short and digestible, and I gunned through my first read in just over an hour However, Lyons does branch into longer narratives with great success. There is no greater example here than The Keeper of Time Lyons constructs her epic poem of hindsight and hope into what may be my favourite piece ever from her pen I give you back your dreams, rewrite them Write them all, and don t write them as if you were afraid of what people would think The Keeper of Time, Nicole LyonsStages of grief infect every corner of Blossom and Bone I teared up at I Won t Always Be Me, and saw myself in A Hard Thing I wanted to scream right with her during A Cosmic Disappointment, and sat in awe of Up in Smoke, a cleverly drawn parallel to the wildfires raging in her native British Columbia. My appreciation for this little book goes far deeper than fanboyism for Lyons work in general It was something that came into my life at the exact time I needed to read it That it holds such power, rooted in not only love but desperation as well, is a testament to Lyons strength as a poet and writer flag 4 likesLike see review Sep 11, 2018 Candice Daquin rated it it was amazing Fortunate certainly makes reviewing a book a considerable challenge I found myself writing an essay rather than a review, and whilst that s not terribly practical it seemed the least I could do for this mouthwatering collection Literally every poem has something you want to say something about, this is a book you would share with your friends, a book you d send people, a book you d remember years later It is in that sense a tattoo rather than a book and it comes as no surprise that yes, people have tattoos with Nicole Lyon s poetry on them She s that permanent and why her popularity is growing as a writer She has a huge following and a massive loyal base who literally hold their breath for her next offering It s not a cult but it is a sign of a modern writer who has broken the barrier so many small press authors have, and made it into the mainstream Yet to call anything Nicole Lyon s writes, mainstream, would be absurd, she is every bit as indie and independent and fierce as she ever was, so it s a heady mix of success and integrity I absolutely loved this third collection of poetry and you can find my review of it on Nicole s site and my own as well as through Sudden Denouement Having reviewed a lot of books over the years, when you get one you especially adore it becomes a true joy to review it, just like the labor of love it took Nicole to produce this exquisite collection does so with the apparent ease of one who effortlessly speaks her soul without need of any edit or further rewrite Which, of course, is impossible One would think And I have never encountered another poet who writes as seamlessly as she But that is only to address the skill of writing First must come the transformation and translation of feeling and transcendent being into words, and that requires pinpoint accuracy and impeccable handling in order not to damage the efficacy of those original goods That is the agony of the poet, and the impossible challenge of her art Nicole acts like it is simply second nature Whatever effort is required comes from living the experience, not from putting it into words At least, that is the impression left to the reader As if that were not enough, Nicole Lyons imbues her poetry with an impeccable grace of rhythm One never stumbles in the reading, for one is simply watching and listening to a river run How then to explain the savagery and rawness one confronts head on in her poems How to account for the anatomical splaying of her soul I m telling you it is impossible to do what she does Therefore, I must conclude with these words spoken in the Foreword of Blossom and Bone, and with which I am fully in agreement From the Foreword I had entered the cult of Nicole quite a long time ago when I first began reading her Her poems got under my skin, they were unapologetic and raw, they begged me to not turn away, and they stayed with me after I put the book down When I want to examine my own soul, I read the poetry of Nicole Lyons.Joel R
