Let me start off by saying, don't bother getting this if you are not a hard core Batman reader. The book has been out of print for so long that the increaseed price is just not worth it. Don't pay any more than $35.00 for this. The story takes place in Batman's early years (it even introduces the Batmobile for the first time in modern Batman continuity. The meat of the story is an introduction to the character Julie Madison, the first ever love interest in Batman comics. It shows why living a do [...]

Batman and the Monster Men is the first major story to take place after Year One (although there is a small story called "Shaman" that is inbetween them). Up until this point, Batman has faced robbers and petty thugs. He doesn't have a Rogues Gallery yet, and he hasn't seen anything out of the ordinary. But this all changes when Dr. Hugo Strange, one of Batman's oldest foes, makes his first appearance in the modern Batman continuity. Strange creates these "Monster Men" that are under his command. [...]

One of the reasons I like Batman as a comic book hero is the slightly more realistic nature of the character (though, of course, the character and his rogues are still pretty fantastical). With that in mind, when I began filling in my collection of Batman comics, the idea of "monster men" as a narrative device was a bit off-putting to me. However, I was intrigued by the cover art and good reviews this story gets (as well as Hugo Strange being one of the main antagonists) and dove in.Short story: [...]

The seller, (scifietc) got the product to me quickly and in great condition. The book itself isn't just a modern retooling of one of the original Detective Comics adventures, it's exciting, develops Batman's character (something increasingly difficult for current writers to do), and fits perfectly into the early Post-Crisis Batman chronology. Only thing I disliked was Wagner's idea that Batman is genetically superior to the average person. Goes against the idea that Batman is an ordinary pers [...]
